Austin radio icon John Aielli dies at 76


AUSTIN, Texas – Austin radio station KUT announced today that their longtime host, John Aielli, has died after two years of battling complications from a stroke he suffered in 2020 He was 76 years old.

Aielli began his work in radio while living in Killeen, eventually securing a piano scholarship at UT. He arrived at UT in 1966 and was hired by KUT at just 20 years old.

Thanks to his experience, he started hosting a morning show in 1970 called “Eklektikos” at KUT which became very popular for its range of music types and the frequent guests he interviewed. The show ran for over 50 years.

If he was a radio host, he also had musical ambitions. Having a jazz singer for a mother and a pianist father, Aielli trained as a singer and gave annual recitals throughout the 70s. Austinites came to love his Holiday Sing-Along at the Texas Capitol.

Aielli, through his impact on Austin radio, will always be remembered by listeners and those who knew him.
