The New York Red Bulls have returned to the banks of the Passaic to welcome FCToronto. Major League Soccer’s First Family Bob and Michael Bradley make another appearance in New York. The home side picked up three extra points at home, giving fans the kind of gameplay they’ve come to know and love.

The league is celebrating Juneteenth this weekend, marking the occasion with special edition training tops, as part of a partnership with Black Players for Change. Autographed jerseys will also be auctioned off across the league. Jazz saxophonist Trey Daniels was the guest musician, performing the Canadian and American national anthems, as well as the black American anthem, “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing”.

You said goodbye, I said goodnight

Dangerous on set pieces? It’s a sentence that I haven’t had the opportunity to write for a while! Just two minutes into the game, John Tolkin’s corner kick found Lewis Morgan. His header in the far upper 90s was the first boost the team needed. The boys in red have dropped too many points at home this season and were determined to turn things around.

You go your way, I go mine

About four minutes later, Toronto’s Jayden Nelson tried to respond with a goal for the visitors, but Carlos Coronel provided his first save of the night. Unfazed, TFC continued their assault on the net throughout the first half. While the pace of the game was fiery, it was also very comfortable, very familiar. RBNY finished the game with just 41% possession overall, a strategy they often adopted.

I heard you say the past was much more fun

In the second half, the former known as Lucas Linhares doubled the lead (56th). Half-time substitute Tom Barlow was shut down on his way to the net, which has been known to happen. The bullet jumped behind them and into Luquinhas’ sights. He threw the ball at the net so hard that Toronto goaltender Quentin Westberg fell into it, the ball just out of reach above him. Emboldened by the decisive lead, the Red Bulls kept up the pace. At the final whistle, fans celebrated another home win.

If I play the same three chords

The next installment of the Hudson River Derby comes in the next round of the Open Cup. NYCFC come to Red Bull Arena – as visitors – to see who will advance. It’s all been done before, but it’s worth watching.
