TRENCH Radio: 10 of the best mixes this week


SoundCloud (while it still lives) can be an impenetrable, endless stream of music, often of varying quality. You need a soundtrack to start your weekend off right, but you don’t have the lifespan to browse through the new DJ mixes of the week. To help you, we have done the heavy lifting for you. We’ll be streaming this series every Friday of every week to bring you the best house music, grime, techno, bashment, R&B, trap, D&B, Amapiano, and definitely a bunch of stuff that has no name yet.

First, Kulv Reyatt gave us an overview of what he has in heavy rotation, including lots of afrobeats, amapiano, rap, garage, a little bassline and lots of house music; Dutch selector Antunes kept it strictly on the piano with a solid hour of rumbling, searing SA beats, including gems from Vigro Deep, Musa Keys, and more; Ikonika dodged the heat wave by squatting in her apartment, but still chose to make us sweat even more with two hours of the most intense amapiano, funky and house music; Dubstep veterans Jakes and N-Type showed dubstep’s deepest, heaviest potential, but still stirred up some uptempo skankers and a hint of grime and garage; Coki took us to the wobbly, bouncy end of the dubstep spectrum (with the requisite amount of DMZ bangers) ahead of his set at the Tisno edition of the Outlook Festival; Finn celebrated the rebound of the speed garage sugar rush with an hour of, in his words, “fast Gs for fast Gs” (including his DJ Q collab of the same name); Mi-El showed us his early inspirations, including noise, movie soundtracks, techno and brutalist footwork from names like Walton, Objekt, Giant Swan and JK Flesh; JD. Reid blasted through hazy, trippy, cosmic club jams courtesy of everyone from Notion and Joy Orbison to Baby Keem and Playboi Carti, before handing over the reins to Halogenix for 45 minutes of soulful, smooth D&B; Junglist band Bomb Shelter Crew have called on South Londoner Anti-Traxx to help celebrate the recent release of their The only way EP with four consecutive hours of 160 sub-smashers; and finally, Zambian DJ/producer SHE Spells Doom used house and techno as the basis for an autobiographical tour of 80s sci-fi/horror films, gqom, early 2000s rap and of Congolese Rhumba and Soukous.
