Volunteer-run radio station Radio Alty celebrates its second anniversary

RadioAlty.co.uk, Altrincham’s only independent radio station run solely by volunteers, celebrated its second anniversary.

Based in studios at the Garrick Theater in Altrincham, Radio Alty aired its first show just as the first lockdown came into force in March 2020.

Presenters set up home studios in lofts, guest bedrooms, broom closets and sunrooms to ensure the launch deadline was met.

Radio Alty was launched to give the people of Altrincham a voice and a platform to learn media skills.

Launched with just five volunteers, the station now has over 25 volunteers, ranging from BAFTA-nominated theater and television directors to retail managers, students and retirees.

Station manager Rod Maxwell said, “The station’s schedule includes a number of daytime shows that highlight local topics and local businesses and provide local news and updates.

In the evenings, the station turns to its specialty shows which present listeners with a wide range of variety, including soul and motown, country, jazz, unsigned local artists, dance, theater, opera and musicals.

“We pride ourselves on being a platform to share local news and programming with residents of Altrincham, as well as former residents living as far afield as Ireland, France, Japan and Italy. .”

Radio Alty also provided local residents with the opportunity to learn skills and gain experience in presenting, podcasting, reporting, production and engineering, and over the two years several members of the team have held regional and national media positions – including Pete Scotson, who recently joined Happy Radio.

The station is part of a community benefit corporation, Altrincham Community Media, set up by its founding members.

He also produces the podcasts Life With No Filter and Life After Work.

To support the station’s continued growth, Radio Alty enlists local businesses to sponsor a show or the station itself.

It’s also attractive to volunteers looking to join the Radio Alty team, with roles available such as content management, social media development and marketing.
